From firearms to garden tools, art, and jewelry…that’s the goal of Guns to Gardens DFW, a movement that’s holding events in North Texas.
“Perhaps they have young children in their homes or no longer hunt. Others may have family members suffering illness or depression, whom they fear might attempt to end their own lives,” said Father Casey Shobe, Rector at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas where a Guns to Gardens event was held in the fall of 2025.
The public charity formed by a group of local faith-based community safety advocates hold events that allow anyone in North Texas the opportunity to anonymously dispose of guns they no longer need or want while building community and spreading peace.
Those firearms are then dismantled completely and transformed by blacksmiths into garden tools and pieces of art.
“It’s a profound experience to see Biblical prophecy come to fruition,” says Father Casey as he referenced the quote from the book of Isaiah about nations beating their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning-hooks.
The next event is expected to be held on Oct. 18 at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
According to the group, participants will drive into a parking lot with their unloaded firearms secured in the trunk or back of their vehicle. A Firearm Safety Officer will then safely remove the firearms and take them through the dismantling process.
The participants have the option to receive gift cards once the firearms have been fully processed at the chop saw.
For those wondering: once the gun is dismantled according to federal guidelines, it is no longer legally a gun, meaning there is no transfer of firearm ownership.
