A military service member was taken to a hospital after falling during a rappelling demonstration before a University of Texas at San Antonio football game Saturday night, according to reporting by KPRC 2’s sister station, KSAT.
The incident happened just before 7 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio, where UTSA was scheduled to face Navy, according to the San Antonio Fire Department, KSAT reported.
The service member was participating in a pregame demonstration with three other officers as part of UTSA’s Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans night, witnesses told KSAT. The service member’s condition was not immediately known.
Witness Adrian Corey told KSAT that the fall happened as the band began playing.
“Once the band started playing, there was a guy that fell down,” Corey told KSAT, describing the service member as coming down quickly.
Witnesses told KSAT that UTSA staff surrounded the service member as he received medical attention. Corey said the crowd fell silent and the band stopped performing.
“It was a very sad moment and we don’t know (his condition),” witness Siomara Corey told KSAT, adding that attendees had asked for prayers.
KSAT reported that it had reached out to UTSA and its athletics department for additional information but had not received a response at the time of its report.
